what is an admin fee?

At Honeycomb we include a 12% administrative fee.

In the state of Massachusetts, we are not allowed to share tips with the back of house. This fee is in lieu of a tip or gratuity and we add it in order to provide equitable wages to both the front of house and kitchen staff. A portion of the fee also goes to employee health insurance, which we feel is an important offering in an industry that often does not provide this. 

We are required by law to call this an 'administration fee', but it is a bit misleading- ownership does not take any of this fee, 100% of it goes towards hourly and salaried employees.


Why are you doing this?

We think that it is important to work toward pay equity and providing a living wage to all our employees as well as benefits. We also would like all of our employees to be able to budget accurately and know what to expect in their paychecks. Of course, there are many challenges to running a business – and labor cost is high among them. Still, it is our priority to continue to work toward raising the wages of all our employees and paying them the most we can while running a healthy business.
